Africa is a year-round destination, but the right timing can mean the difference between a dusty game drive and witnessing the Great Migration. Here's exactly when to go.

Africa spans 54 countries across 30 million square kilometres. The Sahara bakes under cloudless skies while the Congo Basin drips year-round rain; Kenya's savanna peaks in July while Cape Town shines in December. The best time to visit Africa depends entirely on where you're going and what you want to see.
That said, a few principles hold broadly: dry season means thinner vegetation and easier wildlife spotting, cooler temperatures, and fewer mosquitoes. Wet season brings lush green landscapes, newborn animals, far fewer tourists, and dramatically lower prices.
January and February are peak season for the Serengeti's calving season — an extraordinary spectacle where up to half a million wildebeest calves are born on the short grass plains of Tanzania's Ndutu region. Predators are everywhere.
Southern Africa is in its warmest months. South Africa's Garden Route is at its summer best, Mozambique's beaches are hot and busy, and Botswana's Okavango Delta is in its lush green phase.
North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt) is at its coolest and most pleasant for sightseeing — ideal for exploring Marrakech's medinas or the Pyramids without brutal heat.
March and April are when the long rains arrive in East Africa, thinning the crowds significantly. Kenya and Tanzania see lower prices, and the landscape turns brilliant green. Birdwatching peaks as migratory species arrive.
West Africa is finishing its dry season — an excellent window to visit Senegal, Ghana, and Mali before the heat intensifies. The Sahara is still accessible.
Rwanda and Uganda offer gorilla trekking year-round, but March–May sees fewer visitors and occasionally lower permit prices.
June through October is the most celebrated safari season on the continent. The wildebeest migration crosses the Mara River into Kenya's Masai Mara in dramatic crocodile-filled crossings — one of wildlife's greatest shows.
The dry season concentrates animals around water sources across East and Southern Africa. Botswana's Chobe River fills with elephants, Zambia's South Luangwa is exceptional, and Zimbabwe's Hwange is at its best.
Temperatures are mild in most of East Africa and Southern Africa — perfect for game drives from open safari vehicles. This is peak season; book accommodation 6–12 months in advance.
August and September are widely considered the best overall months for safari in East Africa. The Mara crossings are at their dramatic peak. Wildlife is concentrated, vegetation is low, and mornings are crisp and clear.
The Seychelles and Mauritius enjoy trade wind season — warm, sunny, and ideal for snorkelling and diving. The whale shark migration passes through the Mozambique Channel.
Ethiopia's highlands are lush and cool after the rains, making this the best hiking season for the Simien Mountains and Lalibela pilgrimage circuit.
October and November bridge dry and wet seasons. Short rains arrive in parts of East Africa but rarely disrupt safaris. Wildlife is still excellent, prices drop from peak levels, and landscapes start turning green.
Southern Africa's wet season begins — Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa start greening up. Newborn animals appear in Kruger and the Okavango begins to flood.
West Africa is cooling down, making it a good time to explore Ghana, Senegal, and Cameroon. Cape Verde's sailing season peaks.
December is peak season for Southern Africa. South Africa's Cape Winelands are at their finest, Victoria Falls is building towards peak flow, and the South African coast is warm and inviting.
North Africa enjoys ideal sightseeing temperatures. Christmas in Marrakech or a Nile cruise through Egypt is a popular choice for European and American travellers.
East Africa sees the short dry spell before long rains, and the Ngorongoro Crater remains excellent year-round. Zanzibar's beach season is in full swing.
Every country has its own ideal window:
